Amos Adamu faces 3 year ban by FIFA
Nigeria’s Amos Adamu will face a three years ban and a fine of 10.000 Swiss francs. Fifa’s Ethics Committee finally decided to punish the Nigeria and West Africa Union President (WAFU) for what they described as football-related activity after a newspaper video footage has shown the Fifa Executive committee member, Amos Adamu asking for £500,000 to sell his vote for the 2018 World Cup bid. The footage, filmed by undercover Sunday Times journalists, shows Adamu wanting money to be paid to him directly for endorsing a bid.
In the video, Adamu was asked whether the money for a “private project” would have an effect on the way he voted, he replied: “Obviously, it will have an effect. Of course it will, because certainly if you are to invest in that, which means you also, want the vote.”
It was reported earlier last month that Adamu, alongside Tahiti’s Reynald Temarii, president of the Oceania Football Confederation, is also alleged by the paper to have demanded payment to finance a sports academy.
Now it is confirmed that Fellow Executive Committee member Reynald Temarii was handed a one year ban from all football-related activity and fined 5000 Swiss francs.
Both men were provisionally suspended days after the story, as FIFA launched an investigation.
Adamu has expressed his ‘profound disappointment at the verdict and released a pre-emptive statement saying he would appeal.
“I am profoundly disappointed with the Ethics Committee’s findings and had honestly believed I would be exonerated of any charges by now,” he said. “I am innocent of all the charges levelled against me by the Ethics Committee and I completely refute the decision they have made.
“As yet I have not been advised of the grounds of the Ethics Committee’s decision but regardless, I will be lodging a full appeal against it with immediate effect.”
