TP Mazembe: Lamine NDiaye: “A Great Event”

After the victory of the team, the coach Lamine Ndiaye did not miss the occasion to express his satisfaction. The technician started coaching the “Ravens” early in September.  Lamine Ndiaye (coach of TP Mazembe) has said his side his side’s successful defence of the Orange CAF Champions League title as exceptional and a great event.

“Winning this competition is a great event. It is for any club, player and coach a special occasion. My own satisfaction is so important since I succeeded Diego Garzitto only in August. I congratulate my players for their character, state of mind, listening, and the way they applied instructions. The trophy is the second back to back in the club history and my first”.

Mazembe held Tunisian giants Esperance to a 1-1 draw on Saturday in Rades near Tunis to retain the title 6-1 on aggregate and achieve a historic feat of becoming the first club to defend the premier continental club title twice.

An elated Ndiaye, who replaced Frenchman Diego Garzitto midway through the campaign, told Cafonline.com that his side deserved the honour.

“It is an exceptional victory to win the African title. I took over the reins of the team in August (2010) from Garzitto (Diego) and my target was the continental title.

“It was a big challenge and I feel proud to have achieved the ultimate in African club football.”

The Senegalese paid glowing tribute to his players for their unrelenting efforts throughout the competition whilst underlining the quality of his team.

“I had a talented side backed by their mental toughness. My players were very dedicated and the result is success. I worked on the teams tactics since taking over and the response was positive.

“The glory belongs to my players and the entire team and I salute all for their efforts.”

The 54-year old ex-Teranga Lions striker is keen on continuing his stint with Les Corbeaux after a highly successful beginning.

“I’m happy at where I am. The achievement is a plus for my CV and I hope to continue with the club and achieve more titles.”

Mazembe were also winners of the premier continental club competition in 1967 and 1968.
