Sierra Leoneans in Germany Plan 50th Anniversary Fiesta in Freetown

Sierra Sports and Cultural Club, a group comprising young, dynamic and enterprising Sierra Leoneans in Berlin, Germany is preparing to stage a mammoth entertainment event in Freetown to celebrate the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary.

The rationale behind the event, which has been dubbed “Independence JC Fiesta,” is, according to Mohamed Sumah Chairman, “to join our compatriots back home to celebrate and reflect on this historic event in our country’s rich history.”

“We still feel very much part of Sierra Leone even though we might be living miles and miles away,” Sumah says and adds, “As Sierra Leone turns 50 in April next year, we want to join hands to move the country forward.”

Unlike most other entertainment events, the JC Fiesta, which will be held at the Family Kingdom on April 30, 2011, will donate 50% of the proceeds to charity projects in Sierra Leone. “We want to help support the poor in Sierra Leone which is why we have decided to give back half of the proceeds to charity work in our beloved country,” Julius Conteh, a founding member and now Adviser to the Group states.

Sierra Sports Club has already contacted other Sierra Leonean groups in across Europe, including France, Holland, England, Belgium, to lend their support to the event, which they promise will be a first of its kind.

Edward Koroma, Secretary, reveals that key stakeholders in Sierra Leone and local musicians will also be involved. “We want to rock Freetown in a big way because 50 years of independence is a great achievement for Sierra Leone and its people,” Koroma aka Eddie Murphy enthuses.

Sierra Sports and Cultural Club was founded in Berlin in 2004 to promote unity and tolerance through sports and cultural activities among young and aspiring Sierra Leoneans living in Berlin, Germany. The organisation also agitates for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers in Germany.

Other members, among others include: Umaru Sesay, Ramatu Dumbuya, Gibril Turay, Mohamed Suma, Juldeh Jalloh and Junior Rasta.
