In search of Miss Golden Jubilee
As the 50th Independence Anniversary celebration kicks off, the search for the most beautiful Sierra Leonean woman in this Golden Jubilee begins.
Powered by Face Entertainment, in collaboration with the 50th Independence Anniversary Committee, the Miss Golden Jubilee pageant will take place on Saturday 16th April, 2011 at the Youyi Building car park.
A total of 14 contestants, representing each of the 14 Districts across the country, will compete for the golden crown. The contestants, all of whom are currently in Freetown under the auspices of Face Entertainment, were chosen through auditions conducted in the various regions.
According to Emmanuel Coker, Director of Catwalk & Fashion, the audition was designed in such a way to bring out the inner and outer beauty of the candidates, as well as their public speaking abilities.
In fact the contestants are currently being judged as they live together in groups in various accommodations. “The judging process begins from the moment we brought them together in one place. We want to see how they interact and relate with each other, and how they prepare themselves for the finals,” says Emmanuel, who headed of the audition team.
Furthermore, the contestants will start rehearsals on Monday 4th April in preparation for the finals.
“95 percent of the contestants are university graduates, so I am looking forward to very interactive and productive rehearsals,” says Emmanuel.
In line with the theme of the pageant: ‘The Role of Young Women in Peace and Security’, the contestants are expected to be ambassadors of peace and role models for young people.
“As the national elections are just round the corner,” says PRO Henrietta Mbawah, “We want to see how we can use the candidates to reach out to young people about their rights and responsibilities during the elections, and to encourage them to stay out of violence.”
In addition, Henrietta says they are also exploring the possibility of using the contestants as national usherettes to welcome Heads of State and other dignitaries at the Lungi International Airport during the anniversary celebrations.
Meanwhile, the winner is expected to walk away with a Grand Cherokee Jeep valued at US$9,000 (about Le36 million), and will automatically become a goodwill ambassador of peace and security in the sub-region. She will tour the sub-region using his beauty to preach the message of non-violence to young people and to advocate for policies relating to the development of youths.
In terms of the judges, the organisers are not looking for familiar faces. “We are putting together judges with the requisite international experience, and we will try as much as possible to avoid the usual names. We want to ensure utmost transparency and fairness because we want the best of the lot to emerge as the winner,” says the Co-ordinator of Face Entertainment, Habib Husman aka Huzo Rex.
