The editor of the Nation Newspaper, John Koroma, was arraigned before Commissioners of the Independent Media Commission (IMC) for use of trash and bad words in a story carried by his newspaper.

The Independent Media Commission noted with disgust indecent language used as the banner headline of the Nation Newspaper in its Vol.2. No.73 edition of Thursday 14th October 2010 captioned “APC is an ungrateful Asshole”.

The Commission invited the managing editor Mr. John Koroma, on the 14th September 2010 during its board meeting and told him in no uncertain terms that indecent language/material are strictly prohibited by the IMC Media Code of practice.

The Chairperson, Bernadette Cole explained that what the commission was concerned about was not the reference to the APC as being  ungrateful, but the use of the vulgar and indecent word ”asshole” on the front page of his newspaper

The Editor pointed out that the headline capture the felling of some of the angry supporters of Haja Afsatu Kabba outside the court and some of them in fact used that word(Asshole). He however, regretted his mistake and tendered his unreserved apology to the Chairperson and the commissioners.

The Commission instructed him to publish a retraction and apologies to the nation for the indecent language he used and fined him the sum of 250,000 (Two Hundred and Fifty thousand Leone) as a deterrent to other journalists.

The editor accepted to pay.
