Francis K. Josiah Receives ASQ-Certified Six Sigma Black Belt
Six Sigma is a business management strategy that combines economics, statistics, engineering, finance, and creative common sense. It is a measure of variability from perfection. It was developed by Motorola, USA in 1981. Six Sigma originated as a set of practices designed to improve processes and eliminate defects. In Six Sigma, defect is defined as any process output that does not meet customer specifications, or that could lead to creating an output that does not meet customer specifications. The term “Six Sigma” comes from an area of statistics called “process capability studies”. Six Sigma’s goal is to improve all processes to that level of quality or better. (99.9997% or 3.4 defects or errors per every one million perfect output).
Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of process outputs by identifying and removing the causes of defects (errors) and minimizing variations in manufacturing and business processes. It uses a set of quality management methods, including statistical methods, and creates a special infrastructure of people within the organization (“Black Belts”, “Green Belts”, etc.) who are experts in these methods. Each Six Sigma project carried out within an organization follows a defined sequence of steps and has quantified financial targets (cost reduction or profit increase).
My reason for pursuing a six sigma certification was strictly for professional career development. The level of competitiveness in the business sector and the pace of technological change is driving demand for unique talent to tackle and solve complex problems.
Today more than ever, I am convinced that the tools, techniques and strategies applied by most of corporate America is also applicable in the public sectors as well. The US federal government, the Army, Navy and Air Force and the Illinois Department of transportation are a few of the public sectors using six sigma methodologies to improve or deliver quality processes and services to effectively meet the needs of the public at the lowest possible cost.
My appeal and hope is that Sierra Leone’s current political and business leadership can outline a road map to experiment the use of six sigma strategies through consultants and provide the training to professionals and students.
