Ahead of Leone stars clash – Mokoena faces FA blow
Bafana Bafana skipper Aaron Mokoena (in photo) who is expected to lead South Africa to the West Africa region of Sierra Leone this Sunday is waiting to face an FA blow after admitting elbowing Barry Robson in Saturday’s draw with Middlesbrough.
Midfielder Robson was shown a straight red card for punching Mokoena in an off-the-ball scuffle, which led to Liam Lawrence’s penalty leveller for Middlesbrough.
“I elbowed him and he chinned me. Unfortunately for him, the linesman only saw the time he punched me so it was a penalty,” Mokoena told the Daily Mail.
He added: “The ball got cleared and I did him as we were walking out of the box. It was just frustration on my side and I never mean to hurt him.”
“I think I got him in the neck but then he punched me. I am not proud of that and that is not my game. But I am an honest person. That is how it happened and I have to tell it as it is.”
Under FA rules a player can be punished retrospectively as long as no action was taken against them at the time of the incident.
On Monday this week has said he and his team mate are hungry for a win in Freetown, but warned it is going to be very difficult. However, they are capable to contain the home team.
