Boat owner gets Le150,000 fine

Boat owner Abu Kanu, this past Friday bowed his head in court after a fine of Le150,000 was slammed against him by the magistrate of Court No.2.

Abu Kanu, the owner of a boat named ‘Lansana Star’ was arrested by the police for overloading while conveying passengers on the high seas in Tombo Town, Waterloo Rural.

He was however arraigned before Magistrate Wellington of Court 2 on a single count and charged with overloading passengers.

Abu, who was arrested by the police at Tombo on the 28th, charged to court and made to appear past Friday, pleaded guilty and was subsequently fined the sum of Le150,000 or a month imprisonment at the Pademba Prison.

It could be recalled that a devastating sea accident involving the loss of hundreds of lives of persons was reported in 2009 due to the boat owner’s unwarranted overloading of sea passengers.

Tombo Town, not being an exception, has in the past, seen the advent of sea accidents and which at all times, brought to light the loss of innocent lives.

After the slamming of sentence on the accused, Abu was taken to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for fingerprints as is always the case.

Whether or not the convicted boat owner will pay the fine or serve a month imprisonment is a question this press is to receive an answer to.
