Bafana team inspect Sierra Leone

Safa is not leaving anything to chance ahead of Bafana Bafana’s away clash against Sierra Leone in Freetown next month and have already sent an inspection group to inspect facilities in the war-torn country.

Acting Bafana team manager, Barney Kujane (in photo), who led the delegation, refused to divulge anything about the trip.

“I think it’s better for you to speak to our communications department,” he said. “I’m sure they will give you all the information you need,” Kujane said.

Safa Director of Communications, Morio Sanyane, states that all the details about the trip will be made known when Bafana coach, Pitso Mosimane, announces his squad for Sierra Leone in a few days from now.

Mosimane is expected to announce the squad for the October 8-10 match in Johannesburg on Thursday. “We will only release the details of the whole trip when we announce the squad for the match,” Sanyane said.

Leone Stars are not going to be an easy match for Bafana, especially after they earned a credible 1-1 draw against reigning African champions, Egypt, in Cairo earlier this month.  That was on the same weekend Bafana squandered a number of goal-scoring opportunities before beating Niger 2-0 in their first qualifier played at Mbombela Stadium.

Bafana will not have good memories of Freetown after Mohammed Kallon’s goal gave the Leone Stars a 1-0 win in the Afcon qualifier two years ago. However, some good news for Bafana is that 30-year-old Kallon, who plays for Chinese club Shaanxi Zhongjian Chanba, is still out nursing a groin injury.  This is the same injury which resulted in Kallon missing the Leone Stars’ draw with the Pharaohs.

Bafana, who failed to qualify for this year’s Afcon tournament held in Angola, are still coached by Joel Santana who was coach when they lost to Sierra Leone on June 14, 2008.

Next month’s match against Sierra Leone will be Bafana’s second to last game of the year.

Mosimane’s boys are also scheduled to play the USA in a Mandela Challenge match at Cape Town Stadium on November 17.
