Sunday 12th August saw the formal launching of a scholarship scheme and donation of cash to needy deserving pupils, widows and orphans in the Church. The formal launching which took place attracted a large number of people who overwhelming welcomed the new initiative which was also perceived as timely as many children show potential in academia within the church but often lack the support to see them through, while widows and orphans often go through a lot of challenges and difficulties in getting access to basic needs. Gracing the occasion as guest of honour was Rev. Usman Jesse Fornah, National Superintendent of the Wesleyan church of Sierra Leone amongst a host of other dignitaries.

Grants were presented to nine JSS 1 pupils, each receiving a sum of Le 300,000 while donations in the form of cash were also presented to ten widows and orphans as beneficiaries. According to Mr Joseph Yankay Kamara, Chairman of the scholarship Committee, the idea stems from the need to cater for the holistic needs of members of the church.

He said that the basic source of the funds given to the beneficiaries came from pledges made by members of the church during the launching of a church welfare fund in the last Sunday of May 2010.

He noted that a needs assessment was made by the committee to ascertain that those given the grants and donations actually need them while also looking at their commitment to church activities and their performance in their academic work.

He noted that for pupils, a passing mark of 250 was taken into consideration for the MPSE exams while for the sick, orphans and widows, considerations was given to their needs.

He went further to say that this was only the beginning as greater things are ahead for the church to do even more for the community.

Delivering his statement, the guest of honour, Rev. Osman Fornah, commended the initiative of the Brookfields Wesleyan Church for always being pacesetters in doing good works. He challenged other Wesleyan chapters to emulate what their counterpart has done. He said that churches should now begin to look at what they can be doing locally. He formally presented the grants in the form of cheques to the nine pupils.

Preacher for the occasion, Rev. Ali S. Conteh, Senior Pastor of the church, preached on the topic: “The Commitment to Widows and Less Priviledged,” taking his text from the book of 1Timothy 5:16. Members of the Committee include Mrs. Salamatu Ndoli, Bro. Sieh Samura, the men’s president, women’s president, young adult president, youth president and Mr. Joseph Yankay Kamara the Chairman.
