City Council spends Le300 Million on waste management
The Freetown City Council has disclosed to this press that it is spending Le 300 million every month on the running of the Waste Management Company.
It could be recalled that the Freetown Waste Management Company was set up with the principal mandate of clearing filth in the capital of Freetown.
The general manager of the Waste Management Company, Donald Tweed, in an interview revealed how his company’s uncalled for publicity by the press is a spectacular displeasure to society.
Sources say former managers defrauded the company of huge chunks of money as was always provided for by the City Council.
Initially, Waste Management was established as an autonomous body able to generate its own resources and shoulder the administrative cost itself. Ironically, the wishes and aspirations never come to pass as funds provided by the UNDP were mismanaged by persons designated to such responsibilities.
Donald Tweed, revealed how those that were in control during periods of UNDP supporting the financing of the project have been of recent times subjected to a probe by the Anti Corruption Commission.
Mr. Tweed also told this press that tools and equipments at the establishment of Waste Management Company were either not available or not in existence at all.
Under his leadership the company can now boast of 100 shovels, 56 rakes and 40 pick axes.
The Operation Manager, Foday Fofanah, noted that all workers have been supplied with protective gear and that they have the right to better medical treatment. Anyone complaining of sickness gets treatment at a clinic in the compound.
Another success highlighted was the recent increment of salaries of 578 workers.
It was told that the Freetown City Council, on a monthly basis, pays Le300 million on salaries and fuel to the Freetown Waste Management Company.
An investigation conducted says a Ghanaian based company ‘Zum Lion’ has vested interest in the business of waste management in Sierra Leone and that the Company intends to bring better and more modern machinery should an agreement be forthcoming.
“Government is said to be discussing modalities,” we are told.
