SLEMCO concludes Environmental Impact Assessment study
The Sierra Leone Exploration and Mining Company (SLEMCO) is now in its advanced stage of conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study which is a key requirement for the application of a mining lease for the Ministry of Mineral Resources.
Sources close to the ministry and SLEMCO indicate that all other necessary requirements for the application of the lease are now in place.
When news broke yesterday in Port Loko that SLEMCO, which is to commence operation to mining Bauxite in Port Loko and its environs, the people jubilated, thanking God that job opportunities would now benefit the people of Port Loko as well as Sierra Leoneans generally as it will create a huge employment opportunity.
The people added that once the EIA is completed and the Communities Development Agreement (CDA) are in place, then the Government will recommend to parliament for approval of the 25 years mining lease application.
“This is a victory for Minister Alpha Khan and President Ernest Bai Koroma, as this is a clear case for a turnaround in the mining sector if we are to go by the words of President Koroma, that within 36 months of coming into office he will turnaround the economy of Sierra Leone” said retired civil servant in Port Loko.
