FDID-SL commends the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone
Even though the press release by the Human Rights Commission calling on President Jacob Zuma to send back diamonds that were allegedly handed over to Miss Naomi Campbell by Charles Taylor may have come late, yet, it deserves the applause of all right thinking persons of this nation. Foundation for Democratic Initiatives and Development (FDID-SL) hereby joins other well meaning Sierra Leoneans to commend the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone for taking such a giant step in bringing meaning and hope to the lives of those who suffered most during the country’s gruesome civil war.
FDID-SL is equally adding it voice to the call by the Human Rights Commission for the return of those blood diamonds by the British supermodel Naomi Campbell and those diamonds that have been handed over by Jeremy Ratcliffe, the former head of the Nelson Mandela Children’s fund. FDID-SL is calling on the foreign ministry of Sierra Leone to use all available bilateral means to ensure that the government of South Africa returns those stolen diamonds in order to add meaning to the lives of the many Sierra Leoneans who suffered grave consequences during the country’s civil war.
It is disheartening for one to see that very little has been done to alleviate the suffering of the war wounded and women and children who lost their husbands and fathers during the decade long war and realizing that millions of United States Dollars have been spent on the trial of war criminals. FDID is calling on the Special Court for Sierra Leone to do more in salvaging the plight of those Sierra Leoneans who suffered grave consequences during the country’s civil war. We hope that the Human Rights Commission will not only limit itself to that press release but will go further in ensuring that social and economic justice is sought for the victims.
