Sequel to replacement – Soldiers not happy over CDS sacking
Over fifty soldiers visited our office yesterday to register their displeasure over the sudden dismissal of the former Chief of Defence Staff, Alfred Claude Nelson-Williams by HE, the President, Ernest Bai Koroma.
According to the disgruntled soldiers, since Nelson-Williams took over office two years ago, he was able to institute reforms and improve the welfare of soldiers in the RSLAF.
“We were dumbfounded when we heard that he has been replaced by the Deputy Defence Chief of Defence Staff (DCDS), Brigadier Robert Yira Koroma,” said the aggrieved military personnel.
They described such changes in the army as one of President Koroma’s biggest blunders in recent times.
According to them, morale in the army has dropped considerably. The question, what has the former CDS done to warrant his dismissal when he has distinguished himself to the highest degree on their lips.
What baffles the concerned soldiers most was the fact that the new CDS has not been officially decorated but he is seen wearing the rank of a Major General.
The soldiers alleged that it was the Minister of Defence who was behind the dismissal of CDS Nelson-Williams.
When contacted to comment on the sacking, some senior ranking officials, such as Captains, Majors, Colonels and Brigadiers, intimated that they like other Sierra Leoneans were shocked over the sacking of their former boss, adding that they too are not happy, but as soldiers they have nothing to do but to comply with the orders of the Head of State, underscoring that such orders could vicious and wicked particularly for someone who has done so much for this country.
