Bharti Airtel Chief Executive Focuses on Sierra Leone

Manoj Kohli, Bharti Airtel Chief Executive and other senior Executives of Bharti Airtel on Thursday, 29th July 2010 jet into Freetown for the second time in about four weeks interval of their first visit. This visit could be termed as work already started based on the Chief Executive’s revealed plans in their first visit for the country and people of Sierra Leone.  (Photo: Manoj Kohli, Bharti Airtel Chief Executive)

It could be recalled that the deal between Bharti Airtel and Zain closed about two months ago. With a deal between the two emerging markets giants now closed, the acquisition of Zain’s sub Saharan African assets represents a landmark deal for both Bharti Airtel and Zain, and for the African region itself.

It is quite likely that Bharti Airtel will take advantage of market consolidation by divesting some of its legacy assets and potentially looking to add new markets to its African portfolio. One thing is sure – we in Sierra Leone can expect to see a transformation in the country’s competitive and operational landscape as a result of this deal.

Bharti has a heritage in making network sharing and outsourcing deals work and will not be afraid of being aggressive on per minute pricing. The company is also well versed in addressing the difficulties of serving a largely rural, high-churn, low-revenue market.

In their first visit, Manoj Kohli revealed that Bharti Airtel is here to stay and one main advantage is that the company is here to make communication accessible and affordable to all Sierra Leoneans. This could be done by further extending Zain’s widest coverage to all villages and towns in Sierra Leone. He also pledged to complement the Government of Sierra Leone’s effort in making education for all. In doing this, he has planned that Their CSR will focus on education – building and administration schools.
