Photographers unions elect new executive

On Saturday the 31st August 2010, the Indigenous Photographers Union has elected a new executive to steer the affairs of photographers in Sierra Leone. Photographers from the four corners of Sierra Leone converged on Freetown to do the election.

Substantive candidates who vied for different executive positions available in the Union also embarked on active campaigning to woo voters.

However, following the voting, the Election Committee announced the results as following wing: President: Steven E. Momoh, Vice president: Yusif (Alama) Kamara, Secretary General: Sullivan M.S Khallon, Assistant Secretary General: Mohamed B. Mansaray, Public Relations Officer: Chernor M. Jalloh, Treasurer: Abu Bakarr Kamara, Financial Secretary: Ibrahim S. Yillah, and Organizing Secretary: Mohamed F. Fofanah.

At the end of the elections, the newly elected IPU-SL President, Steven Momoh described the election as a landmark and lauded Union members for coming together to take the next step towards greater professionalism, greater opportunities, better education and training and an increased profile within Sierra Leone and the world.

“It’s an exciting step forward,” he ended.

Surely, the relevance of photographers in the country cannot be under estimated. They take pictures or videos at weddings, football matches, at the beaches and at various occasions.

The Indigenous Photographers Union of Sierra Leone (IPU-SL) is one of the largest trade union groups in the country. Union members include studio photographers, owners, agents and freelancers across Freetown, the four provinces and in all the twelve districts.

Among other things done by the Union was to vote for the change of the name from the Indigenous Photographers Union to the Sierra Leone Union of Photographers (SLUP). This change of name was considered as a spectacular achievement by Union members. The reason for the change of name was to give a conducive working atmosphere to international photographers so that they play active role in the progress of the union.

Subsequently, towards the end of the conference, significant issues concerning the development of the union were discussed fruitfully. Delegates from Kono, Kailahun, Bonthe and Pujehun were in attendance and all pledged their unflinching support to the growth of the union under the the new Executive.
