Barrie emerged the luckiest out of 31 participants, when his favoured nation Spain won the World Cup 2010 in South Africa on July 11.

Speaking in an interview with What’s New on Free Radio 95.7 FM last Friday, Barrie said before the promo started he was supporting Brazil to win the coveted World Cup. However, when he was tagged with Spain he did not lose hope but followed the programme to the end.

He thanked the management of Hotel Africanus and Free Radio for the promo.

“I am a big fan of Free Radio station. It’s the only station that satisfies my listening wants,” Barrie said and announced that he would use the money to ‘pimp my ride’.

The cheque was presented by DJ Laish on behalf of Hotel Africanus, which is situated at No. 1 Frazer Davies Drive, Freetown. It’s one of the fastest emerging hotels in the country with ultra-modern facilities.

According to proprietor Nasser Ayoub, Hotel Africanus’ next promo will be a Quranic recitation competition with a cash prize of Le2million (about $500).

It could be recalled that the Free Radio World Cup promotion required listeners to call and select a number, from 1-32, each of which represented a country from the 32 teams that took part in the World Cup in South Africa. Callers were not necessarily required to select a team but a number, making you liable to select a number which did not represent the team you were supporting at the World Cup.

32 listeners qualified after calling to select their numbers. If your team was eliminated from the tournament it also meant your elimination from the promotion.

This is the first time the World Cup is hosted on African soil since it was introduced in the 1930s.

Owner of Free Radio, Bassem Ayoub aka Mr. B, said he decided to give his listeners an opportunity to keep abreast with the World Cup. “The youths, most of who listen to my frequency, are excited about entertainment and sports. This promotion is one way to get them more excited,” said Mr. B.
