Stephane Mbia delay angers Marseille boss Deschamps
Marseille coach Didier Deschamps has expressed his anger at Cameroon’s Stephane Mbia (in photo), after he failed to arrive on time for pre-season training.
The defensive midfielder should have joined up with the rest of the squad in Marseille on Sunday.
The team are now at a training camp in south-west France, and Mbia had not arrived there by Tuesday evening.
“There’s a bit of confusion in his head – I told him to show respect to the club,” said Deschamps.
“If he wants to leave, it’s simple – if a club offers 18 million euros [£15.08m], I’ll take him there tomorrow if he wants me to.”
Mbia had been given extended time off after his involvement with Cameroon in the recent World Cup.
He arrived back in France on Tuesday and was expected to finally join up with his team-mates later on Wednesday.
Mbia told the AFP news agency that flight connection problems had delayed his return and claimed he had apologised to Deschamps.
“I spoke to the coach, who said that he was expecting me as quickly as possible and I apologised – but there’s no problem,” he said.
