Shame – Bumbuna is a fraud

In spite of the appointment of Professor Ogunlade Davidson (in photo) as expert Minister in the Ministry of Energy and Power and the acclaimed successes credited him so far, the electricity crisis still persists, a development many say constitutes a shame to the ministry, the Government and President Ernest Bai Koroma who had long declared the Bumbuna hydro-electric power supply as his flagship development project.

After the embarrassingly long break and malfunctioning of the Bumbuna project, the Energy and Water Resource minister, Ogunlade Davidson has again declared that the Bumbuna hydro power plant has resumed the supply of electricity to Freetown and its environs but the Freetown power supply has been suddenly caught in a spell of fluctuations contrary to claims by the learned professor.

Earlier this year, Professor Ogunlade Davidson said the supply of electricity was terminated in April because of low water level and routine maintenance on the plant. A cross section of the general public including the media has however seen the much talked about Bumbuna electricity as a hasty feat of impressionism that is blighted by as many problems as one could imagine  necessary.

However, the Minister has announced that by December this year, power supply from Bumbuna would be extended to the northern city of Makeni, Magburoka and Lunsar, adding that “work on the second phase of the project is expected to commence soon but that Phase II would require some 30,000,000 Euros, producing an expected output of 400 megawatts.

  • Refering to Yankan and Babson, I think you guys are missing the point. It is not about politics. When you are put into a position, you are supposed to carry out your duties with all diligence. Can any of you living in the Diaspora count how many times you have seen blackouts? I am sure the answer will be a resounding ‘zero.’ The Bumbuna project had been poorly managed from the onset under the then APC Government under the late Shiaka Stevens and Joseph Saidu Momoh. Construction of the hydroelectric dam literally came to a halt during the SLPP reign because of the civil war. The problem with the new APC administration is that the president is not being though enough and risk being undermined by the incompetent people around him. A blackout in the city of any form should not be tolerated at this stage period! The president should get though and get rid of the lackadaisical Minister.

  • I would say get rid of the current contract and get a new one with the Chinese. Some Western countries for the most part are always in Africa to exploit at the expense of Africans.

We can’t keep on doing business as usual. If an existing Contractor is not performing throw them out and get a new one.

I would have done that long time ago if I was managing it.

  • People like Sam Bockarie needs to be locked up in prison for life because you are a threat to human development and progress. What you have written about Bumbuna and the Hon. minister of energy and power is just rubbish and propaganda. Have you got a job or you are one of this idle freelance gossipy?. We in the diaspora are very proud about the great improvement towards the lighting system in Freetown. Stop condemning the good and great works of your fellow men. Think about yourself, ask your self. What have you done for your country. I was told you and few of your fake politicians erected the electric cables along Kissy Road and Wilberforce Street during the 2007 election campaign. (Good for you and well done). The A.P.C Government is here to sort out the long pains Sierra leoneans have been suffering. Keep cool and no tension.

  • Your material lack substance Mr anti development. When I saw the caption of your editorial , I gasped with the hope of reading something very interesting in an investigated point of writing . There we go again another low down dirty form of sabotaging or ridiculing your country to the international world. You can fool your people but not us . Because half a loaf is better than nothing . When SLPP was in power the whole world knows that Freetown is the darkest capital city. The list of the uglies goes on and on and you know that .This particular one as most of your writing lark substance. Shame on you for turning your country a laughing stock.
