Heavy storms and rains for 3 months

The metrological department of Sierra Leone has predicted heavy rains and thunder storms in the coming three months of the rainy season, according to a press release last Friday. Prediction by the department indicates that Sierra Leone will experience heavy rains and storms, the first time ever before, an announcement that has left many citizens very apprehensive over their safety and security.

After the heavy down pour of rains and turbulent storms in the early hours of Thursday 1st July 2010, scores of residents were left homeless in the capital of Freetown as houses were unroofed and some flooded in vulnerable areas. According to the Office of National Security, plenty of houses were damaged and properties worth millions of Leones destroyed as a result of unprecedented gush of rains that besieged the city of Freetown.

Environmental authorities in the country have likened the problem to the uncontrolled deforestation in the Western Area that has left the once lushly mountain tops of the hills bare and unprotected. Other factors, according to the authorities, include the poor drainage system in the streets of Freetown.

Members of the Sierra Leone Environmental Protection Agency have also revealed that “it is possible that Sierra Leone would continue to face such hazards”. Citizens Sierra Express talked to have urged the authorities concerned, Freetown City Council and Office of National Security to be prepared for such emergencies.

The arbitrary erections of structures on supposedly protected areas have also been seen as one of the causes of the disaster looming over the capital. It is revealed that “90% of buildings constructed in the city are without building permits as people do not actually follow the rules and regulations pertaining to building”, he informed.
