ACC Presents Annual Report To President Koroma
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has on Tuesday 6th July presented its 2009 Annual Report to His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma at State House.
Presenting the report, Acting Commissioner of ACC Morlai Buya-Kamara registered thanks to Government for the appreciable level of both financial and political commitment to the Commission’s work. He noted that the continuation of these support is very crucial and remains invaluable for any meaningful success in the fight against corruption in Sierra Leone.
“We continue to rely on the unequivocal support of the public and private sector, the civil society and media as we believe this fight is the peoples fight†he stressed. The Acting Commissioner highlighted some of the success stories of the Commission in 2009 which included financial recoveries made and paid to the consolidated revenue amounting to over Le2.8 billion, eleven court convictions, conducted the maiden integrity award ceremony, construction of Eastern Regional office in Kenema with funds provided by DFID, construction work for the northern regional office in Makeni, working in partnership with civil society monitoring group to monitor the implementation of Anti-Corruption Strategy action plans in the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA), completion of extensive systems review work in various MDAs including Ministries of Local Government, Agriculture, Sierra Leone Police, Prisons etc. and a Code of Conduct for Local Councils.
Mr. Buya-Kamara used the occasion to publicly applaud the efforts of the Commission’s partners particularly DFID and JSDP, Irish Aid, GTZ, UN through the Peace Building Fund and the World Bank, without their support the ACC would not have realized these successes.
Receiving the report, His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma expressed thanks to the ACC for submitting the report. “We are happy that ACC is up to the task. As a government, we believe strongly that fighting corruption should be a national issue that would take center stage in our effort towards developing our country and building our democracy.â€
President Koroma observed that a lot more could be done if the ACC has more support. He assured the Commission that his government will provide the necessary support to allow the Commission to continue with the work it has been doing.
He expressed delight over the Commission’s Systems Review of MDA’s and hoped that these MDA’s will abide by the recommendations in these reviews which he believes will limit the possibility of mismanagement of funds. President Koroma also commended the ACC for the development of Code of Conduct for Local Councils which will ensure their efficiency.
He encouraged the Commission to continue with its good work of leading the fight against corruption in Sierra Leone.
