Teacher Beats Student to Coma
Momodu Koroma, a teacher of the Makeni Comprehensive Academy (MCA) Secondary School in Makeni, is alleged to have beaten one Ibrahim S. Conteh, a Senior Secondary School One (SSS-1) pupil of the same school on Wednesday 30th June 2010.
According to information given to Sierra Express Media, this was realised when a group of students from the school approached the Rogbaneh Police Station with their dead-beaten colleague who was unconscious at the time, alleging that he was beaten by teacher Momodu Koroma.
The police wasted no time in responding to the matter as the students were given a medical form and they left for the government hospital with their afflicted colleague whilst the police dashed to the school. Upon arrival there was a riot of a huge number of students who were pelting stones at the school building to avenge the attack on their colleague.
In his statement to this press Momodu Koroma, the teacher who is alleged to have beaten the boy said, he was conducting an examination in one of the class room when Ibrahim went round and took a book belonging to one girl who was taking an exam. “When I requested for the book, Ibrahim returned the book but was noticed then that Le 1,000 was missing from the book which made me put him under enquiry.â€
Students who were present at the scene said, the teacher beat their colleague very seriously and later dragged him to a nearby hut and where he noticed that the boy was unconscious. “When we saw our colleague lying down hopelessly on the ground, we decided to take him to the police station to make a report†the students explained.
Had it not been for the timely intervention of both military officers and the police who fired tear gas canisters to scare the students away from their charge on the school building in search of the said teacher the students would have either killed the teacher, or burnt the school down†eyewitnesses claim.
Whilst the military and the police were busy putting the situation under control, the students caused a lot of damage to the police and military vehicles. Journalists as well as police officers sustained minor injuries.
At present, the school boy Ibrahim S. Conteh who was unconscious for over six hours is in a critical condition unable to eat but is gradually responding to treatment. However, reliable sources in the school confirmed to Sierra Express Media that the same teacher at one time beat a sick student so badly and left her for dead. School authorities were however not able to confirm this as none were available at the time of the riot.
