Stakeholders in Makeni condemn student riot

Stakeholders in the northern city of Makeni have in the strongest terms condemned the riotous conduct of pupils in the Makeni Compressive Academy (MCA) Secondary School during a meeting that was held at the New City Hall in Makeni on Thursday 30th June 2010.

The meeting was called as a result of the ugly incident that occurred on Wednesday in the school compound when an English Language teacher of the school, Momodu Koroma, was alleged to have beaten an SSS2 pupil, Ibrahim S. Conteh, who later went into coma. This ignited tension that led to the riot by the students.

During the meeting, the chairperson who also doubles as the Deputy Director of Education Bombali, Haja Ramatu Kanu described the action of stoning the school and their authorities as unfortunate and a gross indiscipline.

While the issue is being investigated, the Director of Education said they expect the pupils to behave in the modest way as future leaders. She also frowned at the conduct of teachers who are used to using the rod as punishment, adding that the Education Act is against any form of corporal punishment within the school setting and therefore such will not be tolerated.

The Principal of the school in-charge of the JSS category, Abdurrahman Kamara, also condemned the action of his pupils by destroying their own school.

Mr. Kamara stressed that more than ten leaves of zinc were destroyed by the riotous pupils and that and they also obstructed their ongoing final examination which, according to him, is a minus to their learning.

The Local Unit Commander (LUC) for Makeni Police Station, Chief Superintendent Theophilus Senessie, said the riot left four police personnel injured and a vehicle belonging to the military damaged.

The LUC urged the pupils to follow the normal procedure to channel their grievances as they are working to find a way forward.

However, an emergency meeting was summoned with pupils, their parents and stakeholders the following day where it was unanimously agreed that the school final year examinations should commence while police continue their investigation. Meanwhile, the alleged teacher is helping with the investigation.
