Afsatu Never Signed Cheques … Witness Reveals
The ongoing trial of the former Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Haja Afsatu Kabba continued yesterday at the Freetown high court when the prosecution witness No 5, a civil servant, took the witness box before Justice Samuel Ademusu.
In his evidence before the court, the witness was able to identify Exhibit A to 5 as cheques of the Bank of Sierra Leone and that all the cheques had been ones that were cashed out by his authority as per his signature.
When asked if the signatory of the accused, Haja Afsatu Kabba, was on any of those cheques, the witness responded “No My Lord.â€
During cross-examination by the lead defense council, JB Jenkins Johnston, the witness said the accused told them that State House needed Le 300 million and the instruction given was verbal and was never in any document whatsoever.Â
The Defense Counsel told the court that the said witness never mentioned anything like State House in his statement to the Anti Corruption Commission but the witness insisted that he did.
In this vein, the defense asked the court for adjournment for the statement of the witness both in hand written format and the processed one to be presented to court in the next adjournment date.
Justice Ademusu granted the application for the statement of the witness to be made available to the court before the matter was adjourned.
