Jonathan, IBB can contest in 2011 polls, says Fasehun

Founder/President of Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, Dr. Frederick Fasehun, has said he saw nothing wrong in both former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) and President Goodluck Jonathan contesting the 2011 presidential election.

According to him, since Nigerians have opted for democracy, there was no reason preventing people from pursuing their political aspirations.

He said the success or failure of democracy in Nigeria depended on Nigerians and the machinery put in place by the authority.

Fasehun urged the citizenry to be ready to participate in any form of reforms that would lead to genuine democracy in the country.

To this end, he called on the authorities to adopt the report of the Justice Mohammadu Uwais-led electoral reform committee for the development of democracy in Nigeria.

“Nigerians are the people that have the mandate. They should be ready to take possession of the mandate and give it to whom they want. So, they must be ready to fight for what belongs to them. It is the fault of Nigerians that those who are not supposed to be in political offices are leading us today. We are too docile to have what belongs to us,” he said.

On the ambition of President Jonathan and Babangida to contest the 2011 election, Fasehun saw nothing wrong in that, pointing out that as Nigerians, who were constitutionally permitted to contest, if they did, they would not be contravening any known law of the land.
