Don’t distract Jonathan, PDP warns AC …says AC is fizzling out of relevance

ABUJA—THE Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has warned , the Action Congress, AC, not to distract President Goodluck Jonathan with comments that he was not serious about electoral reforms.

The PDP noted that the issues raised by AC should be dismissed by Nigerians, just as it said the AC was fizzling out of relevance in Nigerian politics.

According to PDP, “this is yet another unfortunate and misguided statement coming at this late hour, and aimed at distracting the attention of President Goodluck Jonathan from his avowed determination to institute a credible electoral system in the country.”

In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali, the party condemned accusations raised by the AC that President Jonathan was not serious with the electoral reforms ahead of the 2011 general elections, said, “the statement is also out of tune with the nationwide commendation Nigerians have been giving to the President for his choice of Prof Attahiru Jega,  as the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

“We wonder why the AC is still dwelling on obsolete and myopic arguments on wholesale implementation of the Justice Uwais Committee report when it is a well known fact that they opposed the setting up of the committee in the first place. This was why they were the only political party that refused to join other parties to provide a common position to guide the Justice Uwais Committee when it was inaugurated.

“In any case, the PDP-led Federal Government is one that is entrenched on principles of due process and will not be stampeded into short-circuiting a process that it initiated ab initio. While we desire a credible electoral system like all Nigerians, we also believe in taking all suggestions through the appropriate legislative and executive procedures in order to institutionalize them.

“We wish to restate our confidence in the commitment and determination of President Goodluck Jonathan in his zeal to provide a level playing field for all political actors towards ensuring free, fair and credible elections in 2011.

“We view the AC’s reference to the conduct of the last governorship rerun in Ekiti State as hypocritical in view of the disclosures of the ignoble attempt to compromise the resident electoral commissioner by the AC, the very party that is making the loudest noise now.”
