How Hygienic Are Our Cookery Shops?
Now that many Sierra Leoneans depend mainly on cookery, It is necessary for me to draw the attention of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and other concerned authorities to the unhygienic state in which many of our cookery shops exist especially in our capital city, Freetown where it is not uncommon to see a cookery shop erected right on top of a filthy and stinking gutter.
There are some other cookery shops located close to toilets while others are right on the street.
And I wonder whether the Health and Sanitation Ministry is properly monitoring cookery shops to ensure that they exist in a hygienic state to save the health and lives of sierra Leoneans.
Even the way some cookery shops prepare food is very deplorable but they sell it at astronomical cost to the public and many people are obliged to buy either because they cannot afford the high cost involved in preparing their own food or they do not have time to do so.
If you want to believe that cookery eating has heightened alarmingly In Freetown, just take a walk along the main streets of the city during morning hours, especially. You will be surprised to see senior servants in their coats and neckties scrambling in cookery shops situated close to the streets.
You can now find cookery shops in almost every nook and cranny of the city; this makes it more necessary for the Health and Sanitation Ministry to double its effort in monitoring them so that they will sell food to the masses under clean, hygienic and safe conditions to ensure public health safety.
And for such a monitoring to be more effective, it must go along with stringent penal codes for those cookery shop owners who keep their shops in dirty state.
Even the site of erecting a cookery shop must be regulated so that they should not be on top smelly gutters.
As a Nation we must be very careful with how we handle the sale of food as what goes in to the stomach can inflict disease if not properly taken care of.
Selling food in garbage-infested environments swarming with fleas is not in the best interest of the public, so, the Sanitation Ministry must act now.
