President Koroma committed to improving educational system

President Ernest Bai Koroma has reiterated his commitment to the improvement of Sierra Leone’s educational system, noting that the first major step towards such a goal would be a review of the current system.

The President was speaking while receiving in audience officials of the high-level intercontinental labour organization, Education International, and the International Secretary of the Danish Union of Teachers, accompanied by members of the Sierra Leone Labour Congress, who paid him a courtesy call at State House today.

While welcoming and thanking the group for their support to the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) and imploring them to continue in that vein, President Koroma said, “As a government, we have committed ourselves to supporting educational empowerment in order to sustain growth in the country…We want to improve the quality of education with the view of reviewing the educational system.” He promised to sit and discuss with the SLTU with regards their view about the Teachers Service Commission.

Earlier, the Deputy Minister of Education, Mr. Algasimu Jah, who introduced the delegation to the President, said Education International has a membership of over 30 million professional teachers around the world, and that the purpose of the visit is to solidarise with the Labour Union and SLTU and be part of the President’s ‘Agenda For  Change’.

The leader of the delegation, Ms. Assibi Napoe, who is the Chief Regional Coordinator in Africa, in her remarks, thanked President Koroma for the audience and his global campaign for the ‘Agenda for Change,’ making education one of his government’s priority areas, as she referred to  the President as the ‘Champion of Education’ while she referred to education as “the pillar for change and development.”

In his statement, the International Secretary of the Danish Union of Teachers, Tore Asmussen, said they are supporting the Teachers Union to be resourceful and as a development partner, while stating that “dialogue is the key to reach one’s goal.”

Emmanuel Fatorma, the SLTU President, in his own remarks, thanked President Koroma for being a man of his words in giving support to the union and helping teachers to be better producers. He said they look forward to the establishment of the Teachers Reform Commission: “SLTU is prepared to help you carry out your vision of the ‘Agenda for Change’.”
