Civil Society Frowns at ACC

A member of a civil society organization operating in the Northern Province has expressed dissatisfaction over the manner in which the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) is dealing with matters under their investigation.

The concerns were made to this press during a snap interview with an activist operating in the Bombali district, Shaka Faranah, on Monday 7th June 2010.

The activist Shaka Faranah first commended the ACC’s strife in ensuring that corruption is at least minimized in the country, especially with big guns and condemns the idea of sacred cows.

Mr. Faranah described the ACC job in Makeni as very slow, which he stated must not only concentrate on current trials but also to speedily investigation other pending matters. He cited two examples of matters that have been delayed by the ACC saying that the cases have been under investigation for over two years now. Among the delayed matters are those of an alleged misappropriation of school funds by the bursar of the SLMB School in Makeni, and that of the alleged misappropriation of donor funds by the director of Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDHR) Gibril Massie Bah.

Civil societies are charged with the responsibility of working in the interest of the people but at present, Makeni does not seem to be having a level playing field for the facts that, they are divided with different motives.

According to a former worker of CDHR Fatmata Bangura, most of them left the organization for the fact that ACC was investigating them and that, they don’t want to be called upon by the ACC. Within two years Fatmata stated, CDHR has lost over 15 strong staff members including the finance/admin officer Kekura, who presently works with SLOIC, project officer Magazuba who now works for MADDAM, the present Director of WOCEGAR Mary Y. Conteh, and current chairman Bombali District Human Rights Committee Abass J. Kamara, to name but few.
