The Sierra Leone Embassy in Riyadh this week joined hundreds of students at the Islamic University of Medinah to witness the PHD thesis discussions of one of their nationals. Alhaji Jalloh of the Embassy witnessed the ceremony and now reports.

The Ambassador, H.E. Wusu Munu was deputized by the Minister Counsellor/Head of Chancery, Ibrahim S. Yilla at the ceremony.

Dr. Ahmad Ramadan Jalloh is the latest student to obtain a Distinction with Honours in the studies of Islamic Creed. Defending his thesis in a jam- packed hall, the learned Doctor told three senior lecturers that he was grateful to the intellectual leadership of the Kingdom, beginning with the founding father of Saudi Arabia, His Majesty, King Abdulaziz Al-Saud to the current one, the Custodian of the Two Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud.

“I would like to honour them for their tireless efforts towards Islam and for making available the resources to educate Muslim children all around the world about the true meaning of Islam.”

Islam, he added, is now a glowing light for the entire world and it has reached the farthest region in Africa, including the small West African country, Sierra Leone.

He also thanked the administration of the Islamic University of Al-“Madinatu Al-Munawarah,” for according him the opportunity to attain the highest level of University education.

In this regard, Dr. Ramadan paid special tribute to University rector, Professor Dr. Muhammad Bin Ali Al-Uqla and all the University Staff, Professors, Administrators, and all those who contributed in diverse ways in fulfilling the objectives of the University.

The committee, comprising Sheikh Dr. Attiyah Bin Ateeq Al-Zahrani (Supervisor and Chairman), Dr. Fahad Bin Sulaiman Al-Fuhaid (External examinar) and Professor Dr. Mohammad Bin Abdul Rahman Abu Saif (Internal examiner) were the three who discussed the PhD thesis of  Dr. Jalloh in the field of Islamic Faith.

The title of the thesis was: “The Pleasures of Faith. Its Causes and Effects and Response on the Variations Related to it.”  The discussions lasted for about two hours before the PHD with a grade of Excellent and First Honors was conferred on him.

After conferring the degree to Dr. Ramadan, the committee unanimously decided to accept the thesis authorized the University to print it as soon as possible.

Who’s Dr. Ramadan?

Born in the eastern community of Fourah Bay, Dr. Ahmad Ramadan Jalloh, did both his Primary and High school in Freetown. After obtaining his ‘Advanced Level’ results at the Sierra Leone Grammar School in 1988, he worked as Data Clerk for the Central Bank of Sierra Leone before he left for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1993 to pursue studies in Islamic Propagation (Da’wa).

A few years after completion of his Bachelor’s Degree in Islamic Propagation, the erudite Doctor enrolled for a Masters Degree in the same field and came with flying colours after four years of studies. When his Supervisor realized that, he had a sound proficiency in his area of studies and the penchant he had for obtaining more qualifications, he recommended to the University authorities for Dr. Ramadan to pursue his Doctorate Degree. After spending 5 years, he proved to his Supervisor last week that there was reason for the recommendation; obtaining his First Class Distinction.

Dr. Jalloh is currently an English Translator and Preacher for the enlightenment and Guidance Center at the Grave Yard of the Martyrs of ‘Uhud’ in Medinah. He has also served as an online tutor and part time lecturer at the Medinah International Islamic University. He also served as the President of the Sierra Leone Student Union for two consecutive terms from 1999 to 2004.

Other Students who graduated recently are, Dr. Mohamed M. Jalloh, who obtained PHD Distinction with Honours in Islamic Jurisprudence and Dr. Mohamed R. Jalloh obtained PHD in Islamic Economics at the Ummul Qura University in Makkah.

In a related development, three students obtained Bachelor’s Degrees. Two of them, Yousuf Baimba Kallon and Abdul Rahman Bah graduated in Islamic Jurisprudence. Mohamed Samba graduated in Islamic Propagation.

The Islamic University of “Al-Madinatu al-Munawarah was founded by the government of Saudi Arabia by a Royal Decree in 1961.

Most of the students, according to a Lecturer at the University are international students.” It’s culturally diverse and boasts of almost all nationalities from across the globe, irrespective of race or colour,” noted the Lecturer.

According to the current President of the Sierra Leone Student Union, Chernor Ibrahim Bah, “It’s the first time in the history of the University for three Sierra Leoneans to obtain PHD in the same year. He added that the University  has produced hundreds of Sierra Leonean graduates, including, Mohamed Alie Bah, former Spokesman to Ex- President Kabbah and current Assistant  Government Spokesman & Director of Communications at the Ministry of Information and Communications, Sheik Abubakar Conteh, Senior Lecturer at the Freetown Teachers College and Missionary for the Muslim World League, Dr. Ibrahim Jalloh, Supervisor of Missionaries for the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowment, Guidance and Da’wah in Sierra Leone, Sheik Umar Farouk Bah, Missionary and Principal of the Ansarul Islamic College in Freetown, Late Sheik Imam Bashar Sankoh Yilla, one time Spiritual leader of the Basharia Movement in Sierra Leone,  Sheik Sulaiman Hamid Kamara, Country Representative of the Islamic Heritage of Kuwait and Proprietor of Umar Bin Al-Khattab Islamic Institute in Freetown, Sheik Sidia Sillah, Former Missionary and Principal at the Ansarul Secondary School in Kono District and currently First Secretary at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Riyadh, Sheik Sallah Janneh, Missionary and Imam based in the United Kingdom, to name but a few.
