Bombali has highest Elephantiasis

Dr. Santigie Sesay head of Lymphatic Filariasis programme, commonly known as elephantiasis in the Ministry of Health has revealed that Bombali district has the highest prevalence of elephantiasis in the country. However, the learned medical Doctor failed to disclose to journalists the name of the institution that conducted the study and the indicators that qualified Bombali District as the highest prevalence.

Dr. Santigie Sesay schooled media practitioners on causes, signs and symptoms and the preventative treatment strategy at the usual press briefing 8th floor Youyi building he noted that worldwide 120 million people are infected and that 40 million suffer some degree of disability.  The disease is caused by parasitic worms transmitted by the anopheles mosquito which is also one of the principal malaria spreading species. He noted that health centers and hospitals in Sierra Leone do not have a test for the early stages of the disease. According to a 2005 test conducted by WHO, elephantiasis is found throughout Sierra Leone as 23% overall person tested in Sierra Leone had evidence of elephantiasis.

Speaking on the signs and symptoms, Dr. Santigie Sesay noted that in the first 10 years or so after the infection there are no signs and symptoms after then swelling slowly begins, most commonly of feet or scrota, breast or arms become swollen, urine appears thick or milky. He noted that affected persons should be treated with mectizan and albendazole every three to four months until they no longer have the sudden episodes of limes pain and fever. On that note the ministry he said will start the campaign against elephantiasis from the 3rd June which will last for five days. During these days the total population of the Western Area will be invited to participate.
