NWRMA Introduces Staff Gagging
The Director General, National Water Resources Management Agency (NWRMA), Patrick J. Bangali Esq in an interview with this medium disclosed that his agency has redeemed the ancient landmark that the Country Rivers was known for.
Director Bangali Esq continued that since the agency is database driven, it is but fitting that there is ready made data on the state of the country water resources to inform government and donor partners decision into water supply systems.
Hence, the reason for the reintroduction of the staff gagging reading at the Rokel River to be monitoring water quality levels monthly since November in 2019.
He furthered that the agency has trained volunteers to be reporting on the water levels trice a day at the Sawa, little and great scarcies rivers, adding that plans are on cause to install staff gage reading in the above-mentioned rivers.
Bangali Esq noted that over the years, catchment areas and other water sources had and continued to be depleted and that the need to protect the remaining few goes without saying.
The Director General cited section 36 of the Water Resources Management Agency Act No.5, 2017 that gives the agency powers to develop regulations.
As a result, he added that the agency has developed four regulations for the effective management of water resources across the country.
He said those regulations will enable the agency to stand the test of time in the future and thereby making the agency fit for its purpose.
The water pollution regulation control Act, Dam safety regulation Act, Ground water development and protection regulation Act and Water use and catchment regulation Act all of 2021, the Director General disclosed was funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
It is the conviction of the Agency that the Fifth Parliament of the Second Republic will enact those regulations before the end of this year.
He noted that the enactment of those instruments will end impunity on companies that had and continues to pollute rivers and other sources by human and other activities.
The agency and partners have erected visible pillars in the Rokel River and other artificial boundaries in other water sources territory from depletion.
The staff Gage reading is an instrument use to monitor water level and quality. The instrument this medium was told is useful for river line communities as it informs on when to commences farming, the possibility of the river to overflows it bank and the kilometer of distance community near the river should establishes their farms yearly.
