The battle for SLPP Scribe!

Inside sources have intimated that behind-the-scenes moves are being made by stalwarts of the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples (SLPP) Labour Minister, Alpha Timbo, to contest for the position of party scribe.

It is believed that Timbo himself has his eyes on the seat, something his backers seem to deny. “He does not want people to think that he is eyeing Napoleon’s position”, a senior party member confided.

Since allegations were made against the incumbent occupant of the seat, bordering on fraudulent conversion of campaign funds in the recently held Bye-elections in Koinadugu district in which the party suffered an embarrassing defeat for the Chairmanship of the District Council, Umaru Napoleon Koroma seems to have lost the confidence of the grassroots.

Timbo is yet to come out in the open until he is assured of the support by the party hierarchy. He once served as deputy Secretary General and also served in the same capacity for the Sierra Leone Teachers Union.

As former Minister of Labour under the Presidency of the late Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, he was instrumental in the establishment of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust, NASSIT.

While he served as Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary School under President Bio, Timbo was implicated in the infamous Chinese rice theft for which he was indicted by the Anti-Graft Commission and later exonerated under dubious circumstances by the former Minister Justice and Attorney General, Dr Priscilla Swartz, who was later relieved of her ministerial position by the President.

The party will elect national officers at a National Convention scheduled to take place in the southern regional city of Bo in December this year.
