FSSG Clinches BSL School Tournament

The Freetown Secondary School for Girls has on Saturday 30th October,2021, won the Brain of Serra Lyoa School Tournament.

The Grand Finale which was held at the Albert Academy School Hall, Berry Street, Freetown, featured the four schools that made it through the semi final: namely FSSG, POW, SLIMSS and Government Technical Secondary School.

The Executive Director of Patriotic Advocacy Network, Ansumana Keita, said that it is part of the organizations’ culture in creating the platform for pupils to articulate issues affecting them in the educational system, their communities and the country at large. “Pupils need to research, think critically and discuss on issues affecting them within their schools and the country at large, so this is why we are giving voice to the voiceless,” he stated.

Astute personalities such as Basita Michael, Usifu Jalloh, Yoko Refell-Wyse Esq etc that graced the event lauded the pupils for the bold steps to vocalize against acts of corruption, marginalization and injustice in schools. They called on them to continue with such a trend as it would help change the narrative in the country.

The pupils said they believed it is time for them to have a paradigm shift in the way the Sierra Leonean youth think and act for positive change by taking responsibility towards personal and national development, stressing that they are both the present and the future.

The Brain of Sierra Loya was a weekly inter-school empowerment competition which seeks to engage school-going pupils on research skills and on critical thinking. It’s a platform through which students articulate issues affecting them, their educational system, their communities and at large Sierra Leone.

The Brain of Sierra Lyoa Tournament entails debate, public speaking, quiz, spoken words, arts, storytelling, drama and innovation contests.

During the preliminary stages of the competition, 20 schools participated on the theme: “Actions to speak out against acts of Corruption, Marginalisation, and Injustice in Schools.”

This Tournament is organised by the Patriotic Advocacy Network Sierra Leone and the West African Youth Network in their efforts to give voice to school going pupils to speak out against the evils of corruption, injustice, and marginalisation within the educational sector in the country.
