After battle of the Titans Pujehun elects new Paramount Chief

Kpanga Kabonde Chiefdom in the Pujhun District, southern Sierra Leone, elected a new Paramount Chief on Tuesday, 19th October 2021 after what has been described as the “Battle of the Titans”.

The new Paramount Chief, Brima Andrew Jaia Kaika also known as Brima the Boxer, is the father of Chief Immigration Officer, Andrew Jaia Kaika.

Nineteen persons from the Kaikai, Jah, Sillah, French, Koroma and Swarray ruling houses contested for the coveted crown on Monday 18th October 2021. Two contestants from the Kaikai ruling house took first and second positions, namely Moijue Kaikai, former cabinet minister in the Government of Dr Ernest Bai Koroma, who pulled 126 votes and Brima Andrew Jaiai Kaikai, who pulled 114 votes, leading to a run-off to attain the required 55% of the votes.

At the run-off the contestants from other ruling houses rallied behind Brima Kaikai which made him emerged as winner with a simple majority. Supporters of Moijue Kaikai claimed that he lost because of his membership of the opposition APC party.

Sources say he told the people that he had suspended his membership from the APC, but had not rescinded it. Kaiakai was a former SLPP stalwart who cross-carpeted to the PMDC of Charles Margai and later broke away from PMDC and joined the APC. When the APC lost power to SLPP in 2018, he kept a low profile romancing with the grassroots in Pujenhun, while eying the Paramount Chieftaincy.

No date has been fixed for the coronation of the Paramount Chief-elect and it is not yet known which title he will carry. Meanwhile, there is a pending Chieftaincy election in the Barri Chiefdom, Pujehun District. The vacancy was created by the death of PC Kon Magona.
