SLPP Chairmen lock horns

With the count down to the national convention of the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), it is clear that it is not only for the position of National Chairman that the battle is fierce.

Another hotly contested position is that of Regional Chairman, Western Area, between two chairmen of Boards of Parastatals, one of whom should clinch the position, namely, the incumbent, and Chairman of Board of Directors, Sierra Leone Ports Authority, Hon Manso Dumbuya; and Chairman of Public Assets Commission, Abu Morseray.

Hon Manso Dumbuya has held that position since the days of SLPP in opposition and had also been SLPP Member of Parliament representing the former East Two Constituency during the Kabba era, campaigning on the platform of loyalty and experience.

“You can call me the institutional memory of the party” he would always say, and boasts of his name as synonymous with the SLPP, being a political disciple of the late Alhaji Sanusi Mustapha.  He was appointed Chairman of the Board at Port Authority by President Bio in 2018.

While little is known about his political career, his opponent, Chairman Abu Morseray, also assures of his unflinching loyalty and support to the party, with a strong support base in the west end of Freetown. Much younger than his opponent, he symbolizes the ‘Youth Revolution” of the party, led by Jimmy Batilo Songa.

A third person vying for the position though not a Chairman of any parastatal, is Brima Keita, a socialite and popular grass roots politician with support base in the east end of the city, particularly Magazine Cut.

Neither constituency nor regional popular support can qualify a candidate to win an election for Regional Chairman in the SLPP. Regional Chairmen, also known as Deputy National Chairmen of the Regions are voted for at the party’s National Delegates Conference or Party Convention.

This seems to play well into the Manso Dumbuya’s bid, being an old name in the house not only in the Western Area, but also in the provinces especially Kambia district, where he hailed from.

However, Chairman Morseray believes that he possesses all what it takes to head the party in the Western Area namely, energy, education and resources.
