MRCG to host Forum to protect Journalists

The Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) will be hosting a one day forum on the safety of Journalists in Sierra Leone on 22nd April, 2021.

The one-day event will be held at the Sierra Palms Hotel on Lumley Beach Road, Freetown. This event will bring together 60 participants including journalists, editors, and managers of top media outlets in Sierra Leone.

Organizers of this event believe that an important step to protecting the safety of journalists is when the journalists and media practitioners becomes conscious of potentially dangerous situations and how they can protect themselves at all times in the line of duty. The forum will also enhance understanding of the role of the media, security agencies, and how they can work together to promote peace.

Highlighting the safety of journalists in Sierra Leone is a very important topic and should be considered in order to facilitate the flow of relevant and factual information to the general public, while building capacity of stakeholders on safety of “Journalists’ Standards”. 

The forum will foster collaboration of stakeholders (media, security agencies, regulatory bodies, civil societies, and other important bodies; and allow for a study on the state of safety of journalists’ policies & practices among media houses in Sierra Leone.
