Sierra Leone Land Minister Indicted

The most controversial land minster in the history of Sierra Leone, SLPP’s Paopa Dr. Denis Sandy has been named and shamed in contravening electoral laws and Memorandum of Understanding signed by SLPP & APC parties at the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) Office, Tower Hill in Freetown that commit themselves into a peaceful election in constituency 110. At the PPRC press conference, the ruling SLPP was represented by its regional chairman, Hon. Manso Dumbuya and the APC National Secretary General, Amb. Osman Foday Yansaneh.

Contrary to what was signed by all contesting political parties, the ruling SLPP government Minister of Lands and Country Planning, Dr. Denis Sandy was spotted by election observer, National Election Watch (NEW) that he has breached election protocols.

In a press statement issued by NEW in the afternoon of Saturday 12th December 2020 stated that “In Kent Village, the Minister of Lands and Country Planning Dr. Dennis Sandi went into polling center 15084 with 2 vehicles (Toyota Land Cruiser registered No. AEE 403 and a blue Jeep with registration No. AMK 884) and men dressed in black suits and an armed Military personnel even before polls opened and was obstructing the work of NEC. He defied the assigned security personnel deployed at the polling station and insisted on staying at the polling center, though he was not accredited. The roving police patrol headed by AIG Brima Jah also approached him, but he still resisted to leave the polling center. The men in black suits that were with the Minister threatened the ONS Regional Coordinator of Western Rural District who was also roving that she would lose her job for asking the Minister to leave the center.

• Vehicle with registration DPT. LEADER HOP was spotted at a polling precinct in Tokeh Village.

• A polling center 15079 at John Obey, polling started at 8:30am because voters refused to vote as the center was not located at its designated location. The center was eventually relocated at the community center as designated.

• NEW observed a number of vehicles without number plates plying across the polling center in Constituency 110”.

Political activists have stated that this is not the first time that government have disrupted electoral process in constituency 110 election, it could be recalled that in 2019, a cabinet minister was spotted publicly destroying election materials in the presence police personnel and nothing was done at the end of it all, the whole election was cancelled.

The current Minister of Lands has been accused by several Sierra Leoneans of grabbing their family lands and giving them to his PAOPA members in the naming of government lands.
