ECOWAS Speaker Meets With Guinea’s Independent National Election Commission: Calls For A Free, Fair And Transparent Election
The Honorable Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, His Excellency Sidie Mohamed Tunis, at the head of a high-level ECOWAS Parliament Delegation, met on Tuesday 6th October with the Chairman of the Independent National Elections Commission (INEC) of Guinea, Mr. M. Kabinet Cisse and Members of the Commission. He congratulated Mr. Cisse for the efforts made by the Commission and praised the solid organization of the electoral process.
Speaker Tunis also stressed that the process of cleaning up the voters’ roll was a major boost in the Commission’s preparation for a free and fair election and admonished the Commissioners to maintain their neutrality at all times.
The Honorable Speaker affirmed that the ECOWAS Parliament’s goal is to offer support to the Guinean people and reiterated Parliament’s neutrality, its respect for the constitution of Guinea and it’s preparedness to provide technical support where needed. He stressed that Guinea’s peace is cardinal to the stability of the sub-region and the Parliament will do all in its authority to secure a free, fair and credible election in Guinea.
The Speaker disclosed that the ECOWAS Parliament will be sending a team of Fifteen Members of Parliament to observe the polls as part of the ECOWAS’ Observer Mission and call on all stakeholders to be law abiding as he wished the people of Guinea a peaceful election.
Guinea is expected to hold presidential elections on 18th October 2020 and there are twelve candidates vying for the presidency, including the incumbent President Alpha Conde.
