Why APC Still Need Ernest Koroma
An excerpt from Things Fall Apart, written by the famous Nigerian Novelist, Chinua Achebe says “A chick that can grow to maturity can be spotted the very day it hatches”. That is to say, a grey haired man has gone through remarkable stages before he became useful, loyal, braved and loved by the people.
This could be attributed to the political differences deepening division among influential members of the main opposition, All Peoples Congress (APC), wherein a set of people are demanding former President Koroma and his entire old guards to go and give way to young politicians. The contenders for the old executive to relinquish their positions are democratically right but they must also think that the essence of former President Koroma still serving as Chairman and Leader of the APC is not unconnected for the party to continue controlling the country grassroots politics. Critics of Ernest Bai Koroma must also learn that it was the former President that raised the party from graveyard or nothing to State House.
Is such a man deserve to be removed unconstitutionally without going through election as it stated in the party constitution?, a political analyst questioned and charged that former President Koroma could only be removed respectfully and constitutionally to satisfy the public so that they will continue to support the party thick and thin to come back to power.
On several occasions, former President Koroma had attempted to retire from the position of Chairman and Leader of the party, but each time he pronounced intention to retire, millions of his sympathizers were shouting, “Poppay nor go yet, we still lek you”, which means, “Pa don’t go at this time, we still need you”. This was replicated at the disputed convention in Port Loko which late turned press conference. One thing the APC should learn is that, when Ernest Koroma is going to retire, who will be like him in terms of galvanizing grassroots support for the party?
What will those ambitious young people to control affairs of the party do in order to maintain the massive grassroots support the party is currently enjoying when Koroma would have gone? Many supporters are saying that they are behind APC because of his presence, which means the action for Koroma to go forcefully will not only discourage many supporters but will also reduce the party’s popularity among electorate. It will be good that the power thirsty young people exercise patient until Koroma and his executive remove constitutionally than to keep on shouting unnecessarily. A word for a wise is quite sufficient.
