Guma Valley Stresses on Staff Motivation in Sierra Leone
The Deputy Managing Director for Guma Valley Water Company (GVC), Engineer Francis Lahai has told media practitioners in Freetown yesterday that they would lay more emphasis on motivating staff because he said, they were recognized and decorated with an award by the Sierra Leone Labor Congress as a result of hardworking and committed staff.
The certificate was awarded to GVWC on International Labor Day, commonly known as ‘May Day’ in recognition of the recent changesin the attitude of the management in promoting workers welfare and as a motivation to improve on their services to the people.
Engineer Francis Lahai discussed that GVWC has 272 staff, comprised both lower and upper cadre and made it very clearly that they always try to be fair to staff adding that the changes represented good motivation.
“We believe that staff needs to be motivated to perform and deliver and stressed that staff motivation at GVWC would not only be an ongoing commitment but would also be part of their daily business as a public utility company. He stated that to achieve that development, they have created an award and incentive system among workers in the entity. He discussed that there was tension and dispute between management and staff but he said, fortunately, the new management has tried to bring everybody onboard so that nobody could be left out.
He described the award as motivating because according to him, it doesn’t only shows that the Sierra Leone Labor Congress is monitoring situation on grounds but it was also a demonstration that GVWC is on the right track.
“We put a lot of premium to our staff”, he told Journalists and disputed the fact that as a company, they still have lot of work to do for GVWC to be able to supply water in the Western Are and appealed to staff for their continuous support to achieve the most desirous goal for the country. He frowned on the idea among citizens that water should be a social good or free. He dilated that water is not free anymore because he said, it’s expensive to supply affordable and pure drinking water expensive natural resource to maintained that GVWC could only continue to deliver appreciable service if customers continue committing themselves in paying water rates.
He made it clear that GVWC is not subvented by Government adding that they are generating money by themselves to support activities of the institution. He therefore pleaded to line institution that they needed utmost support for us to extend services.
He discussed that water shortage is another big problem among consumers in the Western Area and emphasized that its high time GVWC take action against people that cut pipes and wasted water. He described the wicked habit of wasting water as unfair. He said a lot of sensitizations have been carried out among offenders and many arrest have been mad but yet still people continue refusing and violating the law.
On his own side of the story, the Admin Officer, Amadu Kamara said Mr. Maada Pengeh abled to correct situation as Managing Director because was part of the past administration which he described as rotten system adding that when he took over as MD, he introduced an open door policy and adhere to all their challenges. He pointed out that he came at GVWC not to work for himself but for the total development of the nation.
He said they are cleaning the dam on regular basis for the public to have safe, pure and affordable drinking water. He concluded by advising the public to pay their water rates so that they would be able to continue supplying pure and portable.
