Kao Denero and LAJ battle for Hip Hop title

After much rivalry recently between Kao Denero and LAJ SLMTV (Sierra Leone Music Television) will officially crown Sierra Leone’s ‘King of hip-hop’ 2010 on July 2nd  at the Hampton Conference center, Maryland, USA. (Photo:  l-r Kao Denero and LAJ)

Both artists, as you will expect, are nominees for the most coveted category of Best Hip-Hop 2010, together with Shadow Boxer, Black Spoon and Problem M. Kao won the category last year.

The two are also nominated in the Best Single category – Kao for his ‘Salone Borbor’ and LAJ for the hit ‘Money Na Bank’.

Interestingly, LAJ- who’s a new comer- is nominated in four categories while Kao features in three.

However, some entertainment pundits believe Kao has great chances of defending his title as Sierra Leone’s best rapper, since he continues to produce quality songs with good lyrics. Songs like ‘Baby’, ‘The Untouchables’ Black Leo compilation and his most recent release ‘Die u yai open’ only confirm Kao’s place up there in Sierra Leone Hip-Hop.

Nevertheless, new comer LAJ has won the hearts of many entertainment enthusiasts with his bang entry ‘Money Na Bank (Remix)’, which incidentally features Kao, Pupa Baja and Diamond Saj, among others. In addition, his ‘Talk of Salone’ increases his chances of winning, although he faces stiff competition from Emmerson (‘Yesterday Betteh Pass Tidae’) and Innocent (‘Gee Dem Chance’) in the Best Single and Best Album categories.

In the female section both Lady F and Khady Blaq compete in two categories- Best Album (Female) and Best Reggae/Dancehall. Also a nominee for Best Album (Female), Lady Amit is the only female nominated in the Best R&B category, where the ‘Bingo Man’ K-man may be the favorite.

‘Golden Gal’ Vida stands a better chance in the Best Video Category (Female) with her newly released ‘De Mus Tok’ videos.

For the first time, the SLMTV will recognize products from the emerging Sierra Leone film industry, which has been dubbed Sollywood by some film makers. Jimmy B, having produced, directed and starred in several films now shown on international TV channels, looks the favorite nominee in this year’s only category for movies- Best Movie/Film Producer.
