Another Police Brutality Causes Death Of Convict

The professionalism, fairness and uprightness of the Sierra Leone Police force have in recent times come under serious scrutiny by members of the public as a result of the many scandalous acts that have been exhibited by some of its personnel almost on a daily basis. Many a time, Sierra Leone Police is being accused of unprofessionalism, partiality and corruption among others in the discharge of its constitutional duties. These vices exhibited by the police have not gone unnoticed as many reports from both national and international bodies have condemned some of their acts.  (Photo: Richard Moigbe of Sierra Leone Police)

On Friday, 25th January 2019, at around 1400 hours, the police allegedly exhibited another professional misconduct as police officers in Kambia district allegedly torture a loitering suspect by the name of Victor King alias Malu who was arrested and arraigned before the Magistrate court in Kambia. According to an eye witness account, the accused appeared to have been tortured during his arrest at around 12: 00 am on same date before taken to court. The Magistrate handed down a sentence for him to be subsequently taken to the Correctional Centre for 14 days.

The Manager of the Correctional Centre in Kambia met the Office of National Security (ONS) District Coordinator in his office and reported that he refused to accept the convict in his facility on grounds that he appeared to be in a half dead condition.

The ONS Coordinator called on the Magistrate who said he’ll send his clerk to look at the situation. The convict was lying outside the Correctional Centre Compound and few minutes later, the Manager reported that the convict gave up the ghost.

All efforts have been made to reach the LUC and the medical team to respond to the situation but as at press time, convict ’a corpse is lying in front of the Kambia Correctional Centre.
