As Bio Conditionally Declares War ‘New Direction’ Runs Mad
The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) ‘New Direction’ Government has once again come into the spotlight for yet another wrong reason as President Julius Maada Bio, during his Thank You Tour in Kono, was quoted to have conditionally declared war on innocent and unarmed citizens of Sierra Leone.
This statement, by no less a person than the president himself, has sparked a lot of debate from both citizens and non-citizens across all fronts and Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad are now beginning to raise serious question as to the saneness of the New Direction government of the former junta leader, Brig. Rtd. Julius Maada Bio.
His statement. according to many Sierra Leoneans, is not only considered totally unfortunate which has the propensity to create fear and panic among peaceful citizens, but also a reminder of the eleven years senseless war which caused untold atrocities on the innocent citizens of this country.
It could be recalled that one of President Bio’s major campaign promises was to fight corruption and upon his assumption of office in April last year, he wasted no time in setting up three Commissions of Inquiry after the GTTR had suggested that there was widespread corruption in the previous administration of the All Peoples Congress (APC). However, the constitutional instruments used in setting up the commissions of inquiry have come under serious scrutiny as many quarters including the main opposition party, Bar Association among others believe they are in contravention with the country’s 1991 constitution.
The constitutional irregularities in the constitutional instruments that set up the commissions of inquiry have therefore led to the opposition APC party viewing the whole process as a witch hunt and one that is deliberately skewed to only target its members, especially those from the north-west, and therefore made a position in a press release stating that its members will not be subjected to any Kangaroo court commissions of inquiry except the due processes are followed to the letter.
President Bio, as a response to the APC’s position has therefore threatened war in the country should members of the APC party fail to attend the commissions of inquiry when they are called upon; a statement many well-meaning Sierra Leoneans and even international bodies have utterly condemned.
This statement of war by the president has now raised the following questions in the minds of citizens and political analysts
- Does Bio know that he will squarely be held responsible for any conflict that may arise as a result of his utterances?
- Does asking for constitutionality, equal justice. and fairness, by the opposition constitute war?
While pondering over those questions, please note that the country has a constitution through which your powers lie and definitely not to declare war against your own citizens.
