Soweis Call For Ban On Abortion in Sierra Leone

Members of the Sowei Council of Sierra Leone have called on the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) to order the arrest of medical doctors and nurses performing abortion.

According to the Soweis, who were speaking last Friday at a well attended meeting at Waterloo organized by a herbalist, Mohamed Gadafie Sheriff to declare his intention to contest for the Traditional Herbalists’ presidency, abortion is more dangerous than initiating a girl or woman into the ‘Bondo’ Society.

They believe that many deaths among young girls are as a result of abortion which has been reported more frequently than deaths caused by initiation into the ‘Bondo’ initiation.

“Why doctors and nurses who remove foetuses from females’ wombs and throw them into the toilets are not arrested but Soweis who practice tradition are often arrested by the police and charged to court?” one of the Soweis, Ya Adama Bomporo Kamara queried.

She therefore urged Government to underage abortion unlawful to not only to save lives but to also avoid many complications that may arise during the process of aborting pregnancy among girls below eighteen years.

The Soweis said they have stopped the practice of initiating underage girls into the ‘Bondo’ society since it was made unlawful by the Government. They however expressed frustration at why the Government is giving free hands to health workers to practice abortion despite the fact that many more young girls have lost their lives through abortion than Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
