No Games – Yung Sal Says Of Our Women In His New Single
While some terrible men are busy abusing women by physically assaulting and talking down to them, celebrated Sierra Leonean born musician, Yung Sal is using his beautiful lyrics and voice to appreciate our wonderful mothers- our women, daughters, sisters and aunts. He sings for them.
Born Abdul Salam Barrie, Yung Sal some days ago released a single titled ‘No Games’. It is already on YouTube and other social media platforms generating a lot of likes and comments. Radio DJs and partygoersare also catching up with the hit which is spreading wild like a bushfire in the harmattan. It is a must-listen-to.
The song, ‘No Game’ starts in our local lingua-franca, Krio, “Baby babybabylisten to something. Girl ar want for tell you wetin ar mean; u so beautiful you’re the deal.Ar wan for tell you how well ar de feel.”
Then, it jumps into, “One time for your mind, Girl I really reallywanna make you mine. Me love for you fromlong time. Ar nor go lef you, nor go lef you, no time.”
Next, Yung Sal takes the song into an olden day rhyme that resonates with many people. “Dori o dori, Dori mama kura- mama Kura jaggay, jaggay this me fine fine. Fine, finetiti- ar nor go play no games!
He was not done yet. As if not satisfied with Krio and the Sierra Leone market, Sal goes straight into Twi. Also known as Akan Kasa, Twi is a dialect of the Akan language spoken in southern and central Ghana. It is the biggest of the about 17 major tribes in Ghana and forms some 70 percent of that country’s population.
If this is a marketing strategy to tap into the Ghanaian market, he may be having his work cut out for him. He uses NOVA, a Sound Engineer from Ghana to produce the hit single. It was recorded in Freetown at Gordon Studio. In the next lines, Yung Sal spices’ his song with Spanish and French.This is a show of his creativity and his ability to think beyond the confines of Sierra Leone
Currently, in the US, Yung Sal will be shooting two videos and network with promoters and DJs. He plans to do collaborations with Sierra Leonean as well as other international superstars. He also hopes to make an appearance on 27 October at the Sip Lounge on 1812 Hamlin Street NE, Washington, DC 20018.
At the recently held Miss Sierra Leone Pageant at the Bintumani Conference Hall in Freetown, Yung Sal was no doubt a star is born. The audience went wild when his name was announced to perform, and he did not disappoint “E say make ar nor alla, ar say ok, e say shh!!! You still de talk- ar say e – e say shhh!!! E people demsidomnaparlar, pa all way ar risk me life go Peninsular with okada,” the audience repeated. His stage presence was electric.
The music star who started music in 2009 but got his breakthrough in 2015 says music makes him happy. “It’s my form of communication, and I love entertaining people.”
His previous songs include KamInsai, Deal with it, Feelin, Shh featuring L.A.J. and Kam Join We Bo.
Yung Sal blends his songs with various genres. He is the proverbial Jack of all trade. The difference is, he is a master of all. He does R&B; he raps and also throws in some dancehall bits laden witha fusion of African rhythms. He describes himself as an Afropop musician.
No Games is a prelude to what is to come. Next year, a full album will be out. He says it is going to be hot. I trust it will but for now, no games. Let’s dance and sing to ‘No Games’ for our women.
