Limkokwing Students In Turmoil

In spite of the bogus promises made in the run up to the March, 2018 multi-tier elections to prioritize education in the country when elected in office, the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) government led by President Maada Bio, as a follow up to its promise, is now set to destroy the future of over one thousand (1,000) Sierra Leonean students from the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology as a result of the government’s continued dragging of feet to settle its financial obligations to the university.

Limkokwing University of Creative Technology is a Malaysian College affiliated to Harvard University in the United States of America with all its standards, a proud legacy of the All Peoples Congress (APC) administration brought to help diversify the educational sector in the country.

Amidst  the high demand by countries for the college to open its branches in their respective countries, the then ruling All Peoples Congress administration was able to convince authorities of the university to come to Sierra Leone and starts operations in the country. Upon arrival and owing to the high cost of the university’s tuition fees which is not affordable by ordinary Sierra Leoneans, Government of Sierra Leone and the University Authorities entered into agreement they called Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) and in which the Sierra Leone Government decided to give grant-in-aid to Sierra Leonean students at a cost believed to be in the region of $3,500 per annum for a student which is in fact the cheapest in all the university’s branches across the world based on the its Harvard status and standards.

However, the coming of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) in governance is now turning out to be doom for those poor Sierra Leonean students who are in different levels of their courses hoping to go on with their study and become graduates. Immediately after their coming into governance, the Minister of Information, Mohamed Rado Swarray, is quoted to have publically stated on a radio program that Limkokwing University is full of APC sons and daughters and that the SLPP government is not going to accept that without recourse to the fact that the university has almost all political parties’ student wings.

That .unfortunate statement from the minister is now revealing itself as the government has vowed to scrap all previous agreement, the university had with the government of Sierra Leone; a move that will consequently result to the university folding up its operations in Sierra Leone thereby leaving over 1,000 youths as college drop-outs.

In our next publication, we shall bring details of the agreement between the Sierra Leone Government and the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology and the ramifications for any alteration.
