Ex-LAWCLA Boss Lectures Human Rights in South Africa
Melron Nicol-Wilson, former director and founder of the Lawyers Centre for Legal Assistance (LAWCLA), has returned home from Johannesburg, South Africa, after delivering a paper on the challenges and opportunities facing the consortium of African Human Rights Institutions.
Committed to meeting the already foreseen and unforeseeable challenges and opportunities, a monthly consortium of which Lawyer Melron Nicol-Wilson is the head facilitator, meets in South Africa for five working days every month to chat the way forward and to exchange country by country and institutional experiences.
The main thrust of the initiative which will see various stakeholders putting their thoughts together for a period of twelve months, is to prepare human rights leaders with the skills needed to effectively confront human rights issues.
The initiative was established to train future leaders of the African human rights movement so that they will be able to adequately advocate for the promotion of human rights by their respective governments, especially in South Africa, where the recent trend in Zimbabwe has led to massive abuse of human rights. Â
At the May 2010 meeting, Mr. Melron Nicol-Wilson highlighted lack of accountability, lack of much needed funds and lack of trained personnel as the key challenges facing non-governmental organizations engaged in human rights issues.
He maintained that the information technology revolution that has brought in internet and mobile phones are new opportunities that NGOs must make use of.
Participants at the consortium were from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Namibia.
