Youths formed club to combat crime

Youths of  New England Ville west of Freetown, on Sunday October 6th 2009 launched a self defense club to resist the rampant incident of crime in their locality.

According to youth leader Matthew Bangali, who claimed to be chairman of the club, they have established the club to combat the rise in crime rates within their once peaceful community.

Mr. Bangali said the issue started from the recent incident that occurred in the community at Smart Lane, where he said thieves went on Friday night and ransacked the entire area and carted away valuables from one Mr. Andrew Sackey, a resident of the community.

According to Mr. Bangalie, this is not the first time such incidents have taken place.

The chairman went on to state that members of the club simple emerged because of this recent act, and said they are fully supported by the community elders.

Sorie Dumbuya a youth also disclosed to Sierra Express Media that they are ready to tackle any crime in their area as enough is enough according to him.

“The police do not seem to be interested in putting crimes under control at New England, therefore, members called on the community people to cooperate with them by relaying any information to them so that prompt action may be taken,” he said.

Notwithstanding an elderly leader in the community Pa Alhaji Dumbuya called on government, the Sierra Leone Police and the community to render assistance to the vigilante youth’s either in kind or cash as they keep watch all night to fend away intruders.

The initiative they will be spreading to other areas in the community like Sumaila Town, Dwarzack and even Brookfields.

The crime officer of New England Sergeant Hassan Dumbuya when asked why the police seem to be failing confessed they are facing serious problems in catching armed robbers because they lack logistics.

“We do not have enough man power to police the area because it is large and we do no have any vehicle,” he said. The areas covered by the New England police include  New England, Hill Cot, Brookfields, Dwarzack, Sumaila Town and Sorie Town and this six communities need separate police post, apart from the station they have at New England.
