We’ve done it!

We’ve done it!

They said they would; their flatterers, praise singers and sycophants all said they could; but WE said they won’t and they didn’t. That briefly is the story of Pujehun with reference to the Parliamentary bye elections conducted in Makpele and Sorogbeima chiefdoms on Saturday May 8. (Photo: Dr. Sama Banya)

I wrote last week that the constituency had become a top prize for the ruling APC which was determined to get it at whatever cost. Like I had predicted, they poured everything into it – money, bribery, coercion, cajoling, brute force and whatever unacceptable method one could think of was employed, including the presence there of the top notch of the party.

Pujehun mattered to them because again like I said they had been put under an illusion by the propaganda of Charles Margai when he failed to win the leadership of the SLPP. Charles had no alternative except to see the SLPP removed from power and our people fell for his rhetoric and falsehood. We all soon saw the negative effect of the APC victory. Within minutes of the announcement of the runoff result our office was savagely attacked, ransacked and looted with considerable damage to the structure. That was just the introduction; worse was to follow.

The very composition of the cabinet was dangerously divisive; as if that was not deplorable enough, indiscriminate sackings of our people in key positions followed. The tragedy was that the sackings were not due to inefficiency or that the victims had been found wanting. Their only crime in the eyes of the APC was that they were south easterners plain and simple whose people had not supported the APC. That Charles Margai had handed victory to them on a platter made no difference. That is our position as of today; the repeated attacks and destruction of our property, the attacks on our people and the perpetration of violence have continued unabated.

But our people soon saw through the veil of deceit; force of arms was not enough to contain their anger and determination any longer; they were prepared to exercise their democratic right, in Tongo, in Blama simultaneously as the Pujehun Parlimentary bye election.

The result is out and as correctly predicted by the Unity Torkpoi newspaper, the SLPP has wrestled the seat from the APC. There were reported skirmishes and one account even said that one of the Kaikai duos, the deputy minister of Labour was detained. The determination of our people has been stimulated by the kind of leadership that they voted in place in Kenema. A leadership that has demonstrated diligence, commitment and a willingness to listen to its masses. A leadership that has continued to show us the light as we have followed them faithfully with confidence. A leadership that has given the party a shot in the arm and galvanized us into action.

The aim of the APC was to repeat what they did in a local government bye-election in the same area when thuggery scared our people into abandoning their towns leaving the election in the hands of the APC vigilantes and activists.

I have repeatedly challenged the ruling party that if they are proud of their current performance, if as people like IBM Kamara and the others at the African Champion continue to flatter them as having transformed the lives of our people for the better, to leave our people to choose who should lead or represent them. From now until 2012 mere propaganda will certainly not move us. The veil of falsehood has been torn away.

I read with total disbelief in the Exclusive newspaper last Friday, a paper which in recent months has nothing but praise for the way we are being led, that Johnny Paul Koroma the fugitive from the Special Court; the man whose ruthless savages raped, maimed and slaughtered innocent people between May 1997 and March 1998 and in the bloody invasion of Freetown on January 6 1999 WAS THE SAVIOUR OF SIERRA LEONE ON May 8 2001. That was the day that Foday Sankoh’s armed savages masquerading as security slaughtered innocent civilians whose only offense was to march to his house to declare that they were tired with war and armed conflict. What is wrong with some people? More on this in the future.

  • You could not have said it any better Yankay. Puawui is an old hag that does not deserve the respect of any Sierra Leonean. His generation had an opportunity to bring meaningful development to mama salone, but in all his years of public service, he could not even develop his own backyard(Kailahun). Puawui, your generation failed us miserably and look at the mess you have left for us to clean up. Puawui shut your mouth and allow our young generation of patriotic Sierra Leoneans to fix mama salone. The divisiveness and tribalism that you claim is being practiced by the APC was also practiced by the SLPP during their 11 years in power. Use your medical degree to help alleviate the health sector in our country and stop spreading malicious and hate propaganda in the electronic and print media.

  • Talking about divisiveness why are all the people in those top place you mention were southners in all ? It will only take few sleeping people to think that the southerners will vote any other party other than SLPP. So just for democracy other party has to be presented even if they do not have to win. If they do not it will look like a sign of protest . So when you bluff it is sad you are doing it in your back yard .which will not garner much momentum as you are hyping like a big immature .Congratulate your fellow contestant that what is done in a civilised and matured society not mockery .Simply because ,for your country to move forward you need both your friends and those you perceived as your enemies. That is for the interest of the people you claim to be representing . For some of us who visited Sierra Leone at the time OF THE SLPP rule see nothing but arrogance, tribalism, underdevelopment , ignorance with the great feel good effect factors. Tattered and dilapidated roads. No freedom of the press . What you are writing now nobody dare at the time of the SLPP rule to write about it . SLPP send free thinker and ordinary people like journalist who do not dance to there tune to prison . The southerners where acting as if they own the country . We do not care about your phd’s as they are nothing but paper gimmicks . practically good at nothing . Even household electricity yet alone industrial your party when it was in power they can not produce it . When people visited your offices if they do not speak your languages you look at them as if they are foreigners . I visited Sierra Leone throughout your party reigns all I saw in people faces was rage and mischief. So relax old man , who cares if a southerner in your party wins in the south. THE SATANIC BUNCH WHO FAILED THAT COUNTRY .Yaya jammeh of the Gambia was not a degree holder yet he transform his country. Then come you lot with all the degrees only to become liabilities to the poor and innocent .The only problem our people have to get over with is for them to start exercising there voting right for somebody or party based on it visible achievement and practical policies not theatrical speeches. We are tired of this educated fools ,fooling us around. I am a free thinker so welcome to my game .
